Dr. Stephan Wenger is Sr. Director IP and Standards in Tencent’s Media laboratory, and based in Palo Alto, CA, USA. Between 2009 and 2018, he worked as the Vice President IP & Standards in Vidyo, now Enghouse Vidyo. Before that, he had roles in Nokia’s Intellectual Property Rights department as well as in the Nokia Research Center, and at Technical University Berlin. He served on the Board of Directors of UB Video, Inc, and eBrisk Video, Inc from incorporation until their successful acquisition by Cisco (2006) and Intel (2016), respectively. Throughout his career, Dr. Wenger also took consulting roles for a variety of clients, covering video compression and network technology, standards, intellectual property, and expert witness engagements. He received the diploma and Dr.-Ing degrees in Computer Science from Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, in 1989 and 1995 respectively.

Dr. Wenger’s standardization activities are centered around multimedia compression and multimedia transmission. In the video coding standardization of ITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG, he has been continuously active since 1997, regularly chairs ad hoc committees, was test model editor and software coordinator, and has co-authored more than 200 technical contributions. Dr. Wenger has been inventor of some 60 video compression related US patents, many with international counterparts, and with many more pending. In the IETF he is one of the five Trustees that are responsible for maintaining the IETF’s portfolio of trademarks and copyright, and is co-author of 14 Requests for Comments (RFCs). He serves on the board of directors of several industry consortia, including the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), And the Alliance for Open Media (AOM).
